 Student Division

The Student Division, which includes performers from ages 6 through to pre-professionals, offers a wider range of techniques for students to embrace. We offer and highly recommend students take more than one Classical Ballet class per week at this level to ensure the student’s mastery of the fundamental movement methods.

CONTEMPORARY
**We highly recommend Students take one Ballet class a week to compliment this class.

Contemporary dance developed in the early 20th century as a result of artists wishing to break free from the constraint and rigidity of classical ballet. It soon blossomed and evolved, becoming very popular, as it gave the dancer and choreographer the opportunity to explore movement using natural lines, energy and form.

Today, contemporary dance encompasses a broad range of techniques and styles, it can be danced to any style of music and all movements are free to express an emotion or tell a story using the language of movement. This freedom results in unique choreography that draws on harnessing natural energy and momentum, while utilising the breath to provide the dancer with the tools to create the desired dynamic.

Unlike most dance forms, contemporary uses the body’s natural alignment and is therefore accessible to beginners. At the same time, experienced dancers gain strength and stability while being able to push new boundaries and explore new styles of movement, developing a greater connection to the music and freedom of expression through the use of their body.

HIP HOP
Originally created on the streets of New York, this constantly evolving style has taken dance to another level as seen in the movie "You Got Served". Emphasis is on developing individual style and technique which also includes the isolation and the controlled tensing of muscles as seen in styles like “popping” and “locking”.

Hip Hop is a fresh new melting pot of mixed flavours, it includes everything from tight small movements, strength moves as seen in break dancing to smooth lyrical combinations often seen in music videos such as Usher, Missy Elliot and Justin Timberlake.

Come along and have some fun with structured moves as well as developing your confidence when freestyling.

JAZZ
Jazz is the style of dance often associated with musicals as well as the style used by pop stars such as Britney Spears and Madonna.
Classes start with an extensive warm-up and stretch followed by Kicks, Leaps and Spins and then some choreography.
The Edge provides a range of classes from tinies through to advanced levels.

LYRICAL
***Students must do at least one Classical Ballet Class to be eligible to take this class.

Lyrical is a cross between classical ballet, modern expressive and modern contemporary.

Lyrical dance is expressive, simultaneously subtle and dynamic, focused on conveying musicality  and emotion through movement.

It is a combination of intricate, highly technical, and pedestrian/naturalistic moves. It is commonly set to popular music with vocals which are often emphasized over the song's rhythm, but because of the definition of the word lyrical: having a poetic, expressive quality; musical; characterized by or expressing spontaneous, direct feeling; expressing deep personal emotions or observation; highly rhapsodic or enthusiastic.Choreography can be gripping and exquisitely delicate, at the same time.

A solid, ballet-based technique is an essential component of this advanced style of dance.
